How to Create the Illusion of Business Resources

For many small businesses it is a case of ‘sink or swim’ in a pool of larger and more developed business. Thankfully there are ways that you can ‘fake it’ until you manage to get established. This does not require doing anything fraudulent or even misrepresentative; it is merely a case of tricking customers into thinking you are a bigger business than you are. As long as you follow through with high quality services it really doesn’t matter what type of business you are, but you do need to dress to impress.

Here are 5 top tips for making customers think you have more resources than you actually do:

1.        Lose the slippers

If you work from home, this should not mean working from your sofa in your dressing gown and slippers. It is important to create a dedicated work space which is treated by yourself and everyone else as an office. Getting dressed for work in the morning may seem unnecessary but it will affect your attitude and commitment to the days’ work.

2.       Use a professional phone

If a customer calls a business phone and hears a message which introduces a family and a business, they will be unimpressed. They will be similarly unimpressed if they call a business phone and it is answered with the noise of children and televisions in the background. Create a dedicated telephone line for your business and record a professional message to present a professional image.

3.       Look good on the surface

There is absolutely no excuse for self-printed business cards, word-art logos or a scruffy appearance. If you don’t look professional on paper then you will not even receive the phone call requesting your services in the first place.

4.       Don’t be @Hotmail

Having any generic free email address like gmail.com, yahoo.com or aol.com will instantly make your customers think of an insignificant person sitting behind an old computer. When you are setting up your network management systems, seek to develop a dedicated email address for your business. This will instantly make your business appear more professional.

5.       Control your domain

Internet presence is of upmost importance because it is most likely the first point of contact for any of your customers. It is both cheap and easy to set up a domain and website but it is vital that this is done well. Utilise outsourced IT support to help create a neat and professional online presence for your company. Your website might not be the glowing and glittering system that you hope it will eventually turn into, but it is important that it is done well and professionally from the outset.

Image is everything

Whilst people may argue for comfort over formality when working from home, there is an awful lot to be said for professionalism from the outset. The best way to get people to take you seriously is present them with a serious image. The more professional you look, the more inclined customers will be to trust you with their workload. Remember that it will only take one small thing which betrays your business’ size to turn customers away and into the arms of another company which at least looks big on the surface.
