Training for a professional electrician can be attained either through a degree in electrical technology and engineering and also through electrician apprenticeship programs provided by community colleges. Electrician courses prepare students for a career as an electrician, journeyman, electrical contractor or an inspector in the construction or manufacturing industries.
The training courses comprise of the basics of electricity, wiring, the National Electric Code, safety issues, blueprint reading, technical math, introduction to mechanics, physics, circuits and technical writing. But apart from an apprenticeship or university certification it is mandatory for an electrician to clear an additional examination by a local licensing board to be able to work independently. A minimum of 8000 hours of in-the-job training is required to get this license.

One needs to complete a formal associate's degree program or a certification program or a master electrician or Journeyman Electrician training program in the field of specialization to be able to work as a professional electrician. Some programs provide the basic skills in this field and can be completed through an online course. But on most occasions employers provide a comprehensive on-the-job training as part of their electrician training requirements. Usually electrician training programs takes two years to complete, but some advanced programs and certification courses may take a longer duration to finish.
A high school diploma or GED is the prerequisite for admission to an apprenticeship program and apart from this he is also required to complete some courses like electrical theory, mathematics, blueprint reading and safety practices. A minimum of 8000 hours of apprenticeship program has to be completed to become a licensed electrician, and for getting entry to a formal electrician training course program.
