Taking a Holistic Approach to Your Business IT

Having a holistic approach to your business is more than just putting together a business plan. It means understanding every element of your business and seeing how it connects and interacts with other parts of your business. This approach requires you to have great communication and knowledge around business in general, and your business in particular.

In a modern business you will need to look at:

  • Your digital strategy such as your online marketing and web design.
  • Your general business processes and management.
  • Exploring new types of solutions for your business.
  • Decreasing waste in your business.

Reviewing Your Business Processes

While you may have some basic procedures in place for your business, do you use anything like maintenance software to take care of your assets? If you do not, then you really need to look at how you are managing and maintaining your business processes. Are you simply making it all up as you go along and not really considering the possibilities of outside help?

The danger to any good business is a state of blissful ignorance. You really need to take an active role in your business and want to get to know everything that is going on. Get hands on with your staff - but also be careful not to micromanage as it can really reduce performance.

Having an Overall Business Plan

While you might already have a business plan you may not have a holistic one. Once you have been running your business for a while you may just have forgotten about your business plan or, more commonly, it may not be relevant any more.

It is a good idea to have a review of your business plan at least once a year to see how everything is running and what can be added or subtracted from the overall plan. Try to make it as straightforward as possible and – if you can – have separate sections for each key part of your business.

Trialling New Business Solutions

The great thing about your business IT is that there are new solutions arriving all the time. While you don't want to change things too often you will want to trial different ways you can run your business .This can lead to an increase in efficiency. Any trial can be finished if it is unproductive or not cost effective. Some things you might want to look in improving:

  • Find unique ways to communicate between the office.
  • Look at new hardware that can be fun or productive for the business.
  • Explore ways to build on current sales and work for increases.

Cutting Out the Wastage

If you are trialling new systems then you will also want to examine your existing ones to make sure there is not too much wastage in your business. It is a great idea to consult with staff (especially section managers) about what is working and what is not. The more you listen the more you will understand how to have a better, more holistic approach to your business.
